All About Allergies - Tips for Coping with Allergies
Going on a Trip? Here are some Travel Tips for managing allergies.

You've made a list of sights to see, picked out restaurants, and planned your wardrobe. In addition, before you set out on your next trip, you should make sure you've devised a plan for managing your allergies on the road. After all, allergens are everywhere, and they can wreak havoc on your plans unless you take some precautions.

To help you feel your best, follow these tips before you go and while you're traveling.
  • Pack an "allergy bag" with an adequate supply of your medications.

  • Before arriving at your destination, make sure amenities are available for you in case you need to take a break from the outdoors if your allergy symptoms flare up.

  • If you are staying in a hotel or resort, ask for a nonsmoking room and eat in smoke-free restaurants. Cigarette smoke is one of the most common irritants and can aggravate allergy symptoms.

  • Remove any feather pillows in your hotel room and bring or ask for synthetic pillows instead.

  • Bring dust mite encasings for pillows.

  • When driving, close the car windows and set the air conditioner on recirculate.

  • Minimize your walks in wooded areas or gardens.

  • Stay inside as much as possible on hot, windy days – this is when pollen counts are likely to be highest.

  • Request a "smoke-free" rental car.
